Dear Parents and/or Guardians,
Goddard Public Schools is very unique in that we offer Project Lead the Way (PLTW) to all students in grades K-12. PLTW is a hand-on STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) program that teaches students to analyze, think critically, problem solve, collaborate and communicate and is taught through science class in grades K-4. The program empowers students to adopt a design-thinking mindset through challenging activities, projects and problems that build upon each other and relate to the world around them. With PLTW, students learn that there are multiple ways to arrive at a workable solution and that if their first solution doesn’t work, they can try again...and again…and again, if needed.
Because of the nature of PLTW, it is challenging to grade students with the traditional letter grade system. Therefore, beginning with the 2017-2018 school year, instead of traditional letter grades, students in K-3 will be assessed using the categories M=consistently meets/masters the standard; P=progress towards the standard; L=limited progress towards the standard. This grading system is the same that is used for other specials classes such as PE and Music. As a district science department, we believe this grading system will more accurately represent the content and skills your child is learning. Grade 4 students will be assessed using the traditional letter grade system – A, B, C, D, F. In Grade 4, the PLTW activities lend themselves to a more traditional style of grading. This will also help prepare students as they transition to intermediate school where traditional letter grades are used.
We are very excited about PLTW and the opportunities it provides our students. Because of PLTW, our students are growing up in an environment where they as able to explore and discover multiple ways to solve problems and build a love for math and science. We encourage you to talk with your child throughout the year about what they are doing in science. You will be amazed! Thank you for your continued support of our schools and our students. If you should ever have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask. Let’s make it a great 2017-2018 school year!
