Mrs. Mater's Bunnies

At Apollo, learning doesn’t just happen at a desk, it comes to life in creative, hands-on ways that our students will remember for years to come. In Mrs. Mater’s kindergarten classroom, the alphabet is more than just letters on a page… it’s an experience filled with imagination, laughter, and meaningful connections.

"For the past 15 years, in my kindergarten classroom, we make learning the alphabet a fun and memorable experience by focusing on one letter each week. Throughout the week, students explore the letter through hands-on, engaging activities that help bring it to life.

One of our favorite traditions is creating a costume to match the letter we are learning. For example, when we study the letter “C,” we might dress up as clowns, for the letter “O,” we turn into officers and for the letter “M,” we grow mustaches! These creative dress-up days help students make meaningful connections to each letter while encouraging imagination and excitement.  We incorporate a craft or scrape book page to go along with each letter.

We also enjoy a special snack each week that begins with our focus letter. These are provided by the students or are made in class by students themselves.  For example, students make applesauce for the letter “A” and we enjoy a taco party for the letter “T”.  This gives students another way to connect letters to real-life experiences while building vocabulary and reinforcing letter sounds in a fun (and tasty!) way.

These themed activities not only support letter recognition and phonics development, but they also build a strong sense of community and joy in learning. Some of my favorites would have to be tigers for T, superheroes for S and clowns for C.  We are especially grateful to our PTO, whose generous support helps provide the materials and resources needed to make these dress-up days and activities possible."

It’s clear that in Mrs. Mater’s classroom, learning is built on joy, creativity, and connection. These experiences not only help students master foundational skills, but also create lasting memories and a love for learning that will follow them far beyond kindergarten.

We are so proud of the engaging, student-centered experiences happening in our classrooms each day, and so thankful for teachers like Mrs. Mater who make learning truly unforgettable.
